PART III
Chapter 28
âSORRY BLOK, THIS WILL STING,â said Evangeline, with her hands full of green paste. She applied the substance to Blokâs wound. Beforehand, she had used her magic to reduce the bleeding and close the wound as much as her magic would allow her. Then she used her supplies to sow the wound closed. Blok grunted as she rubbed the paste across the cut. âThis will protect you from infection,â she said.
We braced ourselves as our self-moving rowboat hit a large current. âI canât believe the Elves just left this boat aside the Aldeen coast. Doesnât that mean any old scrub could reach their kingdom?â
âThe magic is much more complex than what you see. Somehow it can determine if the passengers on board have a worthy cause to reach Lainunia,â said Evangeline.
Finian breathed in deep. âWhose magic is more complex, the Elves or Flurwickâs?â The question brought silence with it. Flurwick had managed to escape and the reality was that even Blok may have been no match for Flurwickâwho was capable of casting superior levels of magic than other mages. Even when it appeared that Blok had dominated him, Flurwick never lost his composure. He never once looked fearful.
âDo you believe heâs a descendant of The Elders?â The question was directed at nobody in particular, but Evangeline had caught me gazing at her and decided to respond.
âI canât see how it is possible. The Elders are supposed to be Elven.â
âElven shmelven,â said Finian. âLord Jerrus was definitely human; no denying that. The Elves are all up their own arses, so of course they think thereâs no way that an Elder could be human. I believe at least some of The Elders were human, which means itâs possible that they have human descendants. The question is how someone from his world is able to be of Elder blood,â Finian nodded to me.
In all the years Iâd known Flurwick, heâd never shown any signs of being the man he was here in Relaun. Heâd been a man who took pride in his work. His name was respected among marines. Flurwick had even led one of the squads that eliminated a fleet of outlaws who vowed to overthrow the Galactic Alliance.
But then I remembered; âthe vision,â I said. âIn the vision I had that night; Flurwick was determined to get his hands on that scroll. That must have been when he learned how to produce the portal that brought us to Relaun. He was wearing an older version of the lieutenantâs space suit; meaning heâd had knowledge about this place for at least a couple months.â
âFor that to be the case, it suggests that people have traveled between Relaun and your world before,â said Evangeline.
âPerhaps,â I said. A dozen theories came to my mind, but I had no idea where to start with articulating them. My body ached, and the cold breeze sent chills through my body.
âBrando shivers.â Blok pointed.
âVery observant there, big guy.â I responded.
âPlease, use my cloak to cover yourself,â Evangeline said, shifting through her things.
